The depth of a mid-range metal detector is between 12 and 18 inches (30 and 45 centimeters). Specialized detectors can go down to a depth of 65 feet or more (20 m). When using a detector, it’s important to know what depth you’re looking for and what type of object you’re searching for. Other factors, such as the minerals in the soil, also play a role.
