I can zoom in. Trying not to throw too many key commands out there, just because they get overwhelming, but there are a lot. What I wanna do now is I wanna take this bird beak, and go ahead and click on it with the selection tool. Make sure you have the selection tool selected.

You’re gonna see that it’s basically just a couple paths, a couple shapes, rat What I’d like to do is I wanna take the beak, and I wanna color it. I wanna have different colors as segments, kinda like a toucan or something like that, right? Just on the beak. To do that we probably have to take this orange-ish shape, and cut it up or do something to it.

What we can do is we can actually use something like the knife tool or the scissors tool to do this. Come over here to the left, and you’re gonna see that we have the eraser tool. The eraser tool, by the way, is probably my favorite tool ever. We’re gonna use it a little bit maybe, we’ll see.

Go ahead and hold down on the eraser tool over here in the tools panel. It might look like a white stroke but the cut areas are simply gone transparent. You can add a background color to test it. The easiest way to cut part of an image is to crop the image, but if you want to cut the element outline and use the cut part on another background, the pen tool is the go-to.

Thank you for this! As with the Trim Image function, OK will fix the crop whilst Copy will maintain the underlying image s and place the resultant cropped image instances on top in position. It’s important to consider the differences between linked images and embedded images when looking at cropping.

It’s only possible to apply a clipping mask crop to linked images as true cropping removing pixels will require edits to the external image file in Photoshop or similar. Using linked images can help reduce Adobe Illustrator file and ensure the same image such as a logo is used across multiple projects. Both native Illustrator functionality and Rasterino provide methods to relink an embedded image if required.

Rasterino allows for in-line editing of an embedded image in Photoshop or your preferred photo editing software, including ones cropped using a clipping mask. There are two ways to crop an image in Illustrator. Both have their pros and cons as detailed here. It’s possible to remove the clipping mask at any stage to reveal the original image providing greater flexibility and allows for experimentation. You can use a clipping mask on both linked and embedded images. If you modify an externally linked image, the clipping mask-cropped result will automatically update.

If you only intend to export the final artwork as an image, the resultant file will not be differentiated from one which used a true image crop.

Unwanted areas of an embedded image are permanently removed, therefore reducing the Illustrator or other exported vector file size. Cropping takes place on a pixel-basis whereas vector cropping can easily crop regardless of the image’s pixel grid.

Large files can significantly slow down your workflow. Editing, zooming Read more ».
